The LIVE program originated in Prince George in 2017 and has been extremely successful. In the five years of continuous operation we have connected with over 600 youth from all over British Columbia. We have always had more applications than we could handle.
The pandemic forced us to go ONLINE like so many others, originally for the youth who were to attend in the spring of 2020. It was well received and so we decided to continue it earlier in 2021. In our planning in the fall of 2020 because of the upheaval of our society in the late fall and the ever-changing public health restrictions we realized that Rotary clubs would not be able to interview students or speak to them in person. That is when we decided to roll out the program directly to School Districts in British Columbia.
The resulting uptake was very surprising. Although the registrations exceeded 500, it is clear now that the overall quality of interest was not the same. We learned a lot about what works and what doesn`t work. The lessons we have learned on how to implement the ONLINE program are clear now and this fall we are launching the ONLINE program by re-engaging the Rotary clubs in British Columbia. It is clear that with sponsorship by the clubs there is a direct engagement with the youth. The light bulb went on that this may in fact be a simple way for the clubs to connect in the community particularly where there is not an Interact or Rotaract group.
It is important that the students who participate in any Rotary program have a connection with a sponsoring club. A connection that goes further than one luncheon to thank the members. Our observations over the years with this program as well as Adventures in Forestry and Environmental Studies has led us to the conclusion that the more engaged the student beforehand the better the outcome for both the student and Rotary. And that all starts with the sponsoring club knowing who their student nominees are and have created some form of relationship prior to the program start, hopefully to continue post event.
