ADVENTURES - ONLINE

The pandemic had us pivoting to an online offering which reached over 700 youth in British Columbia. The original focus of an ONLINE self directed asychronous offering will contiue and is now available to all Canadian youth.

  • The purpose of the ROTARY Adventures in Health Care program is to help those interested in EXPLORING educational and career opportunities in health care.
  • The ONLINE program is not meant to replace the LIVE program. Adventures in Health Care ONLINE  will broaden your scope of knowledge in the field of health sciences, allowing you to make more informed choices as you move forward in high school. Good planning gives you good results.
  • What follows below is an outline of the ONLINE program.
    • Unit 1 - Exploring the sites and sounds of the LIVE program
    • Unit 2 - Stepping into the life of a Canadian medical doctor in her final years in residency. Her insights are 21st Century and sometimes thought provoking.
    • Unit 3 - Investigating how diseases were handled in our look back in history.
    • DOING SCIENCE 101 - Spread through out the units are some hands on lab experiments. The labs were originally designed to do at home but one in particular we have learned works better with the use of a microscope. You may have to check with your science teacher at school to use one if you choose to hunt for a Tardigrade.
    • NEW THIS YEAR!!!
      • ANATOMY 101 - A 3d overview of some of our major organs and how they make us tick.
      • CASE STUDIES 101 - Become a Doctor for a day. After meeting with a sick patient you are asked to diagnose and recommend treatments of their ailment.

The ONLINE program is now available to all  high school students in Canada to explore.

There are brief quizzes following some segments that will encourage you to look back and recall what you have just watched and read....its called retention. The quiz is not a pass or fail, its purposes is....you guessed it, retention. But you  are encouraged to retake each quiz if you are not happy with the results ,...remember its about learning. There is no fail,  just lack of knowing. Upon completion of the three units of the program(participating in all the quizzes and the student survey at the end) a certificate will be awarded. It can be used in your graduation portfolio as well as your Capstone Project in Grade 12.

UNIT 1 - EXPLORING ADVENTURES IN HEALTH CARE

The core program consists of photos and videos from previous LIVE events and hyperlinks to more specific career information, augmented with pertinent details. The accompanying video is one students perspective of the four day event.

UNIT 2 - VIOLIN MD

Join her in her vlog in the hospital to show you what a day in the life of a doctor is really like! This is her journey through Canadian residency training. You will get to see clinics, intensive care units hand experience crazy 26-hour call shifts!

UNIT 3 - ERADICATION OF A DISEASE - CASE STUDY

The third unit is a video series on a timely subject - "Global Eradication of a Disease", but not COVID19 !!

Learn how past pandemics have been handled.

DOING SCIENCE

When every you see this fellow, its time for a break from reading and watching videos.  It is about lab experiments, learning about the human body and helping sick people get well.....

DOING SCIENCE LAB EXPERIMENTS 101

Time to get out the brain, strap on a bib and a pair of safety glasses. You will go hunting for a microbe that has survived outer space, to trapping DNA.

Originally designed during lockdown from school in the spring of 2020 when no one had access to school labs, it is based on using kitchen stuff.  Of course times have changed a bit. The only caveat to that is the need for a powerful magnifying app, that now could be replaced with using a school microscope. That would mean asking for permission.

DOING SCIENCE ANATOMY 101

New in 2022,  this is a basic primer. Anatomy is the study and science of the structure of an organism and its parts.

This is probably your first dive into the physiology of the human body. It is a chance to learn a bit about some of our major organs that make us tick.

DOING SCIENCE CASE STUDIES 101

Time to put on your thinking cap and get out your research tools. ....not nust Google! Think bigger.

You will become a physician for a day, interviewing a patient who has come into your office feeling sick. Your job is to review their symptoms, identify their illness and prescribe a course of action to bring them back to good health.
