DOING SCIENCE

There are a few labs and case studies dispersed throughout the program. They are optional. You do not need to do them but if you do chose to try a few or all of them, you should consider gathering up the following items so you can draw on them once the tasks appear.

All the labs have been tested in a kitchen setting.

KINETIC SAND

LAB #1 - KIT LIST

  • safety glasses
  • corn starch
  • dish soap
  • food colouring
  • mixing bowl and measuring spoons
  • water
  • fine sand (Michaels - Fine Stone Granules by Ashland worked well)

OR............ purchase kinetic sand at Michaels or other hobby stores in your community.

DNA EXTRACTION

LAB #2 - KIT LIST

  • safety glasses
  • 3 strawberries (frozen and then microwave to thaw)
  • filter paper or coffee filters
  • zip log bag/bags
  • kitchen style funnel
  • dish soap
  • table salt
  • rubbing alcohol/isopropyl alcohol
  • bamboo skewers

FINDING A TARDIGRADE

LAB #3 - KIT LIST

Editors note; this lab has a built in difficulty which is the microscope. Obviously not everyone has one sitting around the house. We downloaded a magnifying app of 50x and it seemed to work.

  • safety glasses
  • paper bag/lunch bag or envelope
  • petri dish or clear plastic container lid
  • tweezers
  • patience

MEDICAL CASE STUDIES

MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS SCENARIOS - #1 AND #2

CALLING DR. WONDERFUL!!

As a leading medical researcher and practicing physician, you have the choice of trying one or both the two scenarios presented.

There are no lab tools other than what you would normally use to research a problem.
